  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Units
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1/2 medium onion (finely chopped)
  • 1/2 green bell pepper (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup no-salt-added tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup no-salt-added ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1.5 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1.5 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup unsalted chicken broth
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and bell pepper, and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.
  2. Add ground turkey. Cook until turkey is fully browned, breaking it up as it cooks about 5–7 minutes, adding the minced garlic in the final minute.
  3. Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, and brown sugar.
  4. Add smoked paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes (if using).
  5. Pour in the broth and stir well. Reduce heat to low and simmer, covered for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Remove cover and continue simmering for another 5 minutes until thickened.
  7. Serve on toasted buns or oven-baked potatoes for a hearty, low-sodium meal.
